Beyoncé Says Jay-Z’s Loc Journey Was Inspired by Blue Ivy

The Cécred founder just shared an intimate look at the six-day comb-out process

Along with a few new rap verses, Jay-Z recently debuted a loc-free hairstyle during his latest performance at the 2026 Roots Picnic. Showcasing free-flowing coils is a stylistic change for the artist and executive, who is best known for wearing a tapered Caesar haircut and, more recently, a set of free-form locs, or wicks. Hairstylist Letisia Ravelo previously explained that, ahead of his performance, Jay-Z’s eight-year-old locs were unraveled with the help of a suite of Cécred products, primarily its high-slip Detangling Spray .

While the star has worn his new ’fro just about everywhere since his Roots Picnic performance—from Game Three of the NBA Finals to a World Cup game—Beyoncé and Cécred just revealed a behind-the-scenes look at the entire takedown process of Jay-Z’s locs ahead of the performance in a YouTube video last night.

“Everyone wants to know the details of Jay’s hair transformation,” Beyoncé narrates in the first few seconds of the video. She shares that his decision to comb out his locs was a tribute to his late father, who always wore an Afro. Beyoncé revealed in the video that Jay-Z started his nearly 10-year journey to convey the beauty of natural hair to his daughter, Blue Ivy, who was five years old at the time and lacking confidence in her own. “We really wanted her to love every inch of her gorgeous curls,” Beyoncé continues.

The comb-out process took six days in total and more than three bottles of Detangling Spray, with his stylist Nakia Collins , Beyoncé, and even Blue Ivy each tag-teaming and working in sections to detangle Jay-Z’s hair. Starting at the bottom of each loc, the team combed higher and higher with Cécred’s Essential Tools until reaching the base, then doused it with spray. And to create even more slip, the stylist and team combined the Detangling Spray with the brand’s Moisturizing Deep Conditioner and Moisture Sealing Lotion . Cécred’s Hair and Scalp Balm was also a staple in Jay-Z’s takedown process to break down residual buildup.

Now that the step-by-step process in Jay-Z’s hair journey has been revealed, it’s clear how deeply rooted it is as an act of love. It starts with the star’s love for his daughter’s well-being and appreciation for her natural coils, and ultimately with the way Beyoncé and Blue Ivy joined together to help him remove them. After each wick was finally removed, Beyoncé spent the next day detangling, deep conditioning, and blow-drying Jay-Z’s hair herself, and even gave his ends a trim, adding another layer of intimacy to the process.
